Crafting with People

I used to collect, of all things, vintage group photos. It started with military panoramas and then school children, and eventually just clusters of people. I sold most of them during my antique-dealer days but pulled out a few neat ones I still have and thought we could have some fun!I cropped out some peeps from a 1938 group photo and made an image for the background of a No. 10 business envelope and zoomed in on a select few to use at the bottom of some simple note cards. Then I added a few blank labels from HERE. If you use the images for your own stationery, add your address to the envelopes (I used 9 pt. typewriter font, Trixie) as well as your name to the cards. For the note cards, print the 2-up image (below) onto 8.5" x 11" cardstock and cut exactly down the middle. Then cut each to 4" wide and trim off the bottom margin if necessary to create a bleed effect.
I lightened the group image for the envelope to keep within USPS regulations for envelope graphics, and no doubt that postal barcode is going to tattoo the gang in the front row. There, custom funky people stationery, for lack of a better name.
Oh, and don’t forget to have some fun with the faces!Make other things with the group photo like tin can wraps for your pens and pencils.

Click on images to enlarge and use. Here are some other wonderful group shots for your projects!

Thanks for Christmas present inspiration. This looks like it can be done on the cheap, which makes it ideal for this season. It does look expensive though, which is the mark of a true crafter. Thank you!

This is one AWESOME idea! What a smart way to jazz up a plain envelope! I'm gonna need more ink cartridges for my printer because I think I might print every blank envelope that I can find in my home! Yay!

I love your blog and the creative things you share with all of us. Unfortunately, I can't seem to download this project so that it looks like yours.

The stationery does not fill an 8.5x11 page, as shown in your samples. I've tried opening in Safari and Firefox, with the same result. Also, how does one personalize them?

Thank you for your help, and for having such a fun blog!

I actually found your blog through this post and spent forever going back through just about every post! You are AMAZING!!!!!
Anyways, I was just wondering on how you made the picture a lighter grey?
I would be so grateful.

Kristen G, to answer your question, I altered the photo in Adobe Illustrator and gave it a transparency of something like 40% or more. I don't know anything about other editing software to help you know how to do that, but in Photoshop you could create a giant eraser tool circle and erase at a low percentage the whole photo at once. I'm sure there are better ways, but that's all that comes to mind right now. Thanks for the kind comment, take care!
