I totally dug her beautiful apparel designs, especially this one with image transferred to the inside of the shirt.
While shopping her space, I noticed a book on her table. A sneak copy of her amazing new book, (released only yesterday!) called Design Your Own Tees, Techniques & Inspiration to Stitch, Stamp, Stencil and Silk-Screen Your Very Own T-shirts.
I think I spent 15 minutes or more just looking through the pages and was immediately impressed by not only the fantastic uniqueness of the designs in her projects but the simplicity in which each project is explained. Soon after the Renegade, Jennifer sent a book to me, pre-release. Thank you, Jennifer! I’m always so impressed with artists who’s skills and techniques they’ve honed over time to make a living and choose to share them with the rest of us. That’s exactly what Jennifer’s book is all about. There is SO much fun to be learned in her book.Design Your Own Tees details many different methods of embellishing your own apparel. I can’t decide which to try first! Probably the project from the chapter Rough Edges. I’ll leave you with that tease, you’ll have to buy the book to see what I’m talking about!
I adore the multiple pattern overlays on this shirt:
I would have never thought to just embellish sleeves! LOVE IT!
Jennifer shares several ways you can print designs to your apparel and several ideas for coming up with your own designs, including funky finds like the “junk” pictured here,
to make the fabulous print pictured here!
She also shares several very cool designs for you to copy straight from her book.
I appreciate her attention to clear and easy-to-understand tips and techniques and explanation of tools to perform each project. Jennifer not only shares techniques, but she coaches you through the artistry of creating your own apparel in your own style as well. Here is my favorite excerpt from her book:
Love your mistakes.Printing often goes awry. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve discovered that an “accident” is a lot more interesting than what I’d planned. Maybe you can salvage an imperfect print by printing another image on top. And of course, the beauty of a handmade tee lies in its imperfections.
Don’t you love the way she thinks?!
Jennifer has been so wonderful as to not only share her new book with me but she has also offered up TWO books for a JSIM giveaway!
To enter the giveaway, simply leave a tee-related comment on this post with an easy link to contact you if your are one of the randomly chosen winners. Very Cool!
StarvnRtist@aol.com
I have so many BORING tees. This would be so much fun to try!
Let me be the first to leave a comment ....Jennifer is an amazing crafter, and seems like a really nice person to boot. The colors she uses in her tees are bright and fun, and her designs are intriguing. But, I definitely need to read her book because, despite your comments that it's "easy" to duplicate her designs....I have my doubts!!
They seem too amazing to be easily reproducible. Hope I will prove myself wrong.
Thanks for the awesome post.
Also, I'd love more of your insights on the Renegade. There was one near me in LA this summer. I really wanted to apply, but it was expensive. And then, I didn't even get to go to it that weekend. (I had a show elsewhere). So, it would be great if you posted on it. :)
Thanks, K
I am a teacher and each year my class makes t-shirts to wear on field trips. I have been looking for a new and exciting idea for my kiddos to make this year...this book looks to have just the ideas I am looking for! Can't wait to check it out!
DIY my own tee's has been on my list of want-to-do's for some time now and this book looks like just the ticket. You've definitely piqued my interest in this book, Tx for heads up!
Not a big fan of t-shirts, but I imagine the methods would be great for printing on other clothes too. I would love to win a copy :-) surveypeters[at]gmail[dot]com
Hi Keri, you're in luck! I DID post on Renegade, two years in a row now: http://justsomethingimade.blogspot.com/2010/08/renegade-wrap-up-and-giveaway.html
I'm totally going to use this book to make unique clothes for my baby.
I would love to win this book. I love to embellish things and T-shirts would be fun to do.

oooh i want to embellish some tees
My daughter and grandchildren would be so excited if I were to personalize some tee shirts for them. They would make some great stocking stuffers. Hope I am one of the lucky winners.

TEE-hee! I love your giveaways!
Just getting started in altering and decorating my own t-shirts and would love some more ideas and techniques!

I've been getting really itchy to get back to some creative outlets like this. I've been working non-stop on a master's degree for two years and the end is now in sight! I'd love to win this book as my re-introduction to non-academic books and endeavors. I love AmyC's idea of upcycling old t's. I also have a non-profit I work for that it would be really great to make the instructors some unique, stylish shirts and these ideas would be great to incorporate!
I would love to use this book to inspire my 12-year old to design her own tees instead of always buying them from Big Name Brand stores. She's a very creative kid and maybe just needs a kick start! And I could update my tees too!
That book looks awesome and I have plenty of tees to practice on! very cool!
Just had a baby this spring and still trying to shed the dreaded "baby weight". In the meantime I need some fun new tees to wear and it's hard to find them in the stores that either a)fit comfortably and not showing too much of my flab and b)don't cost a small fortune! How great would it be to just buy some oversized men's undershirts and art away with them!!!
I really love the sleeves -they are so neat looking.
vickie
My tees are bland, boring, standard-issue-Target Mom tees. The kids got into tye-dye this summer and now I'm interested in switching things up a bit.
What an amazing looking book! I have some old tees that are just dying for pretty additions! Thanks for the giveaway!
alessandra7 AT gmail DOT com
I recently purged many old tshirts I never wear. I am all about revitalizing my tshirt collection with adorable handmade tees!!!
emily
I love how to books and I love tees.
It's the majority of my wardrobe.
racinelive at gmail dot com
I would actually wear t-shirts again if I had this book to inspire me! I have been passing up some great colored tees lately at some great prices because I just don't like wearing plain t-shirts.
OH MY GOODNESS! I *need* this book! I am in the process of losing weight. (I've been working hard and already lost a significant amount.) While I am in the process of downsizing, I am only buying inexpensive, simple clothes because the loss is enough that I've already gone down 4 sizes. No point in investing alot of $$ in a wardrobe till I'm at my goal.
Anyway, this leaves me with a closet FULL of BORING t-shirts in various colours. They are comfy, but in no way a reflection of the creative, artistic person I am.
If I won this book, it would help my outside match my inside. I'd alter my shirts. It would certainly be a spirit lifter to go to my closet and see cool shirts I made hanging there!
*fingers crossed*
I am going to go right now and put in a request for my library to purchse this book, just in case I don't win!
Awesome! I have a stack of ugly tee shirts that are just BEGGING for some attention...
I am 8 months pregnant and can't wait to fit into something crafty, cool and non-maternity! That book looks like a total blast! Thanks for the opportunity:)
How wonderful for one great person to recognize another great person.
Imperfect is just another form of perfect. Right?
How cool to see some of the really cool designs.
Sandi
Wow! Back in the 90's I painted shirts all day for boutiques. It would be great to see some new techniques!
I love to wear t-shirts and I used to make my own - but a new job and weight gain has disheartened me! So a look into these fab new ideas would be just the refresh I need. :D
Lovely book from all appearances, and wouldn't this sparkle up my own T-shirt collection! Hope I win, and thanks for the contest.
Love the idea of refashioning a tee to be useful once again...Looks like a beautiful book...thanks for offering!
ooooh, tees! I am in one 24/7 this sounds like something I definitely need! wonderful giveaway
I literally was telling my daughter she would have to stencil the tee she wanted when I opened your post. Serendipity! I can't wait to see Jennifer's book.
since i live in t-shirt this would be great to pump up the volume a bit! love the ideas!
LOVE IT! I am always looking for ways to "bedazzle" (as my husband puts it) my basic tees and things. thanks so much for the great giveaway!

If I win one of these books I PROMISE I will make one of the t-shirt designs in it:). I love stuff like this!
Yay! Finally a cheat sheet for those out there who find themselves creatively challenged at times!! I love t-shirts. I wear them almost everyday. It would sure be nice to pretty them up a little!!
I love Jennifer's ideas that you have shown here! How generous of her to donate books to a giveaway! The decorated sleeves are fantastic. I have been dyeing and drawing (with dye) on T shirts for a long time now. It would be wonderful to get some new ideas. So matter what, I am definitely checking out this book!
Thanks, Cathe, for the chance to win, and for telling us about this intriguing book!
Well, I am a Tshirt kind of gal ... and I have been having inclinations to make my own ... this book would be perfect!
My kids and I tried decorating shirts with the glue resist (crafty batiking) with less than perfect results. But it was and I'd love some new ideas. You know we enough tshirts with stains that need some love and ceativity.
I just started playing around with altering my t-shirts. This book looks like fun!
WOW!!!! I LOVE THIS! I have always wanted to do designs on fabrics. Last year I did some calligraphy on fabric. I was pretty happy with it too. I would love to see if she has tried it and what it looks like.
Thank you for a chance to win one of her books.
i've been daydreaming of doing some patchwork/applique to some t-shirts...this is inspiring!
Would love the book, wishing the talent to design comes with it.
Is it available at Amazon? Just wondering because I want the book, and have no luck!
mle134@aol.com
I am a constant t-shirt, bandana on my head kind of gal. This book would really help get me out of my comfort zone of over-sized gray or white tees.
So fun! I have some plain Ts that need an update.
My daughter has been turning her t-shirts into adorable outfits for my two-year old granddaughter. I know she would love this book.
Thanks for sharing where I can buy...just in case I don't win!
: )
I am so wanting to makeover my tees! Thanks for the opportunity to win.
Those are so cute, I love the long tee/ tee dress that is on the cover, I can only imagine what the book has on the inside. I'm a teacher, and the most comfortable and afordable peice of clothing is a tee...but they dont always look professional when they are plain. This would be a great way to dress up a plain tee. Also, I can see my students making their own tee this way.
Thanks for the chance at this awesome giveaway!
cortneylyon@gmail.com
Wow, that book is serious eye candy. I'd love to try my hand at print my own tshirts.
Cool book and cool T's
Melinda
This book looks so cool. I have seen some simple tutorials on customizing t's but this looks so cool and in depth. It would be a fun twist on the screen printing biz I grew up in.
Now that my grandnieces are getting older, this would be an interesting after school project to keep them busy. I am a T-shirt fanatic (per my mother) so would enjoy upcycling some of my favorites. This sounds bun.
What an awesome book - I would LOVE to win it! =) I've been on a t-shirt kick lately and within the past 10 days have made/embellished three! These ideas are just what I need to feed my habit. Thanks for doing the giveaway!
What a great giveaway, thank you so much! That book looks fantastic. I'm starting to get really bored with my plain t-shirts!
I attempted my first silk screening a couple weeks ago and it went horribly wrong. Would love this book!
wow, awesome! i've always loved making tees but tie-dying and iron-on transfers are about the most i know on this subject! this book looks full of great ideas and techniques. thanks!
I'd love to win this great idea book! My daughter loves to craft with me and this looks like the perfect thing to do with her and all of her tees!
maggieraguse@comcast.net
What a fun giveaway! I'm usually seen wearing vintage t-shirts just because i like having something others might not. This book would help me take that to the next level. My daughter and I would have a blast making fun, funky shirt for others to covet:)

it is nice to have t-shirt ideas that are fun and not so dated
Looks like there are some great ideas here! Thanks!
I was painting a couple of plain boring tees tonight for my little girl. I could really use this book!!!
have seen some online tutorials about how to design tees, but most of them involved gashing large holes in revealing places. Her book is so much more interesting than that--would love to try out some of the designs!
So kind of her to offer up her books for a giveaway--thanks so much!
I definitely have some tees that need help. That looks like a really fun book!
these tee's are FANTASTIC
I love it
omg~ i always have trouble getting my hands on nice tees, would love to design my own!
Those tees are awesome! I've been trying to make one for my niece this past week and am very stuck on getting it to look right. This book would be great to have! Not to mention there is another niece in the works!
DebLady614[at]aol[dot]com
I've been personalizing my tees since I was a teen, I just love to express my self with my tees!
Those designs look amazing! The only tee-decorating I've done is with tie-dye and puff-paint when I was younger - I'd love to design something a grown-up me could wear!
littlesproutbooks at gmail dot com
Very cool - I find myself wearing tees almost everyday and bar one or two they're pretty boring. I'd love to have a go at making some designer ones.
Wow that looks like a wonderful book. I think I shall put it on my wish list in case I am not lucky enough to win. On the off-chance I do I can be contacted through my own blog at http://perfectlittlepurses.blogspot.com
Fingers crossed.
What a way to elevate the humble T...
fantastic stuff!
How could I not comment?!?!
The book looks amazing and here in Italy it's very difficult to find this kind of books :(
I tried myslf to embellish t-shirt, and the only one I'm proud of is this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/multiductus/4590939919/

What a great sounding book! I've been thinking about silk screening on T shirts for a while now. It probably is about time to read up on it some:)
I love t-shirt crafting!! This would be a great book to own!!! Thanks!
I'm always wanting to change and alter clothes but I never get to it, i need some inspiration. This post alone is inspiring, thank you for sharing!
ooooh this book looks soo cool...and i have several tee~s waiting for a little tee~l~c! ;0)
I love the honeycomb fabric embellishment - I think I would try that first!

Ooh, this would be a great book to own! I'd like to do some surgery to oversized t-shirts I own, and do not know what to do with!

I've loved raeburn ink for years now. My antarctica sweatshirt is almost 6 years old and still my most favorite sweatshirt in the whole wide world!! I love Jennifer. When I ordered from her years ago - she was so super nice!! Yay for the book! Cheers

I think i would love to try to embellishing some Tees, but i was always afraid i would ruin them. Maybe a book would help me to start trying.
I think the sleeves are just amaing. I never would have thought to just alter sleeves and now maybe I will try something like this as the scale will not be so daunting.
Thanks for all the sharing you do Cathe!

Thrifting is just about my fave thing on earth. The t-shirt aisle is always packed full of beautiful colors of jersey just waiting to be recycled, but that is the one aisle that completely baffles me... Finally, a book that could show me how to recycle some of the shirts I've passed by so many times!!
I love t-shirts!!! What else is there to say?
craftyface@gmail.com
I really love the idea of using found objects to make prints, then use those prints to design a shirt. very cool!
I have so many solid colored tshirts that I would love to spice them up a bit. This looks like an awesome book!
the book sounds fabulous... I have doodled on a few tshirts before but not tried to print on one.. precently I have made a few lunch bags out of the tshirts my son has grown out of, very simple but useful.
I would love to learn more about this! Hope I win, I am fascinated with printmaking and would love to take it to fabric!
Free Tee! I'm in!
This book looks great and I love the idea of printing on the sleeves. So simple but unexpected! Would love to win this book, I would but it to very, very good use.
I've been messing around with tees for the past year or so -- reconstructing, restyling, and making my own. This book looks like it could definitely provide some further inspiration.
I have long been "designing" my own tees: I have taken scissors to nearly every EVENT tee I own, cutting off the collar, fringing up the sleeves, snipping designs into the bodice. Now for a book that can show me how to design with OTHER implements of torture to bring about BEAUTY!!

So cool! I try to make everything I buy unique in some way - I don't want something that every one else has!
My friend has done tie-dye tee-shirts forever, and I've always wanted in on the shirt making but tie-dye just isn't my my thing. This book sounds like it has a little bit of everything about shirt designing and I am certainly up for trying a little bit of anything where I can express myself and share with others.
How cool is that!
I used to love embellishing t-shirts! Remember puffy paint? I would love to try something a little more grown-up!
Cathe - what a great book! I have so many plain ol' tees that could be made into something fabulous!
I have so many plain T's in desperate need of sprucing! I'll be getting this book no matter what!!

I am totally intrigued with this book. I have been looking for another hobby (lol).
Her designs are great. Love the idea of just embellishing the sleeves.
Thak you both for a very generous giveaway.
Great inspiration! I love the embellished sleeves! Woo-hoo!
i have so many tees that need something else- i'd love to reinvent my wardrobe and then move on to my customers! :)
Sweet - especially since t-shirts are the un-official mandatory uniform of motherhood.

Great looking book...
For those of us who are plus-sized, there is less variety in the women's tees department..it would be wonderful to learn some great new techniques that I could use to embellish and brighten up the boring tees I have...
My son recently won a t-shirt design contest at school. This would be fun to go through with him to help expand his horizons! cheree[dot]daley[at]gmail[dot]com. Thanks!
Considering I live in t-shirts, and strive to live in graphically cool and interesting t-shirts, I think I must have this cool book! My head is already spinning with ideas and possibilities...
i've been looking for something a lot cooler to do with my nieces, other than tie-dye. i would love this!
Love this How to book!!! I love the idea of creating a tee that is truly mine.
So cool!
I was just thinking about running to the craft store during lunch today and looking at some stuff to make over some old clothes!
WOO HOO I love this book. Even if I don't win I will own this book. I have a ton a tees that I want to make new with a few emblishments.

Oooooooooh! I love the idea of using "junk!" Wonder if I can find a mini junk trumpet, or maybe guitar....
Would really love to see what is inside this book! Thanks for the giveaway.
I love the idea of designing your own Tee's. Most store designs are so juvenile. And I'm not into the floral prints they think women want to buy. I would love some inspiration.
Love her ideas! My boys and I had a great time this summer creating new shirts for them! Now I need some for myself!
BGGriffith@msn.com
I'm so excited about this book, which I will definitely buy if I don't win, because last spring I purchased a whole box of carved wooden stamps in really cool designs. I need a little kick in the pants to get started making my own unique tees, and this book would do the trick!
So many tees..so many options....
I have tons of plain tees I've been wanting to embellish.
The only thing I could come up with was machine embroidery. This would give me so many more ideas.
I tend to gravitate towards solid-color, boring tees, so this would be a great way to liven up my wardrobe!

That sounds like a really awesome book! I'd love to try something like this - lately I've been buying 2 tees and using one of them to cut up and embellish the other one with. I've made some with flowers around the neckline, and some ruffles down the front. It's so much fun! That picture you shared of the printed sleeves is great!
What a talented young lady....WOW!! This looks like such a great resource. I am currently pregnant and find most pregnancy clothes either ugly-or way over priced for the amount of time you wear them. This would be SO much fun to make my own stuff as I "grow" and still have some sassy style! Thanks for this great opportunity!
This book looks amazing. Oh the possibilities of what one can do beyond the tee-shirt....the gears are already turning.

Love the ideas and fun prints. I especially loved the quote about the "mistakes"--isn't that the truth?! Who could live without t-shirts? I especially love long sleeved ones when the weather finally cools down a bit. Nothing better! Thanks for the heads up on the book and for the opportunity to win one.
I need some creative time!!! Love these ideas!!!
These days you can tell a person by the t-shirt they wear. Being able to create a shirt exactly how you want it would be amazing. Plus, I need to love my mistakes.
brookeanndove@yahoo.com
Oh I love it! I've been wanting to do some t-shirt printing, but don't really know where to start. I'm especially trying to recycle some of my kids tees! I like the excerpt: "Love your mistakes." I think that's the hardest thing ever--not just in crafting, but in life in general. God never promised it would be easy, just that it would be worth it!

This book looks so neat! I've been meaning to try out some fabric printing. Always looking for new inspiration!
I just went and purchased two embellished tees because all my tees are so boring! This would be something fun to do for Christmas gifts too!!
Greetings from Israel!
I love the book, and I really love your blog!
Thanks for the opertunity!
Cool!! I love T-Shirt fashion! I mademy daughter a bikini from two old T's a couple of years ago and had to make her give it up when she grew out of it. She was so sad!
Love these designs! I'm a huge fan of fun, clever tees and would love to make my own.
i like the "junk" part... how many great ideas for tees just by looking around you...

Excellent! I wear tees every day and they certainly need some sprucing up!
skaetzer(at)sbcglobal.net
I LOVE the sleeves only one. I usually don't wear tees because the tees in my size are all old-lady looking. I would love to have some ideas of tees I could create with my own style! :-0
i can never find stylish or chic t-shirts in my size and always end up just buying solids... this book would defly be great to fill that void in my t-shirt wardrobe... and maybe tote bags too!!
I always love books that expand on techniques - it makes me broaden my creativity into areas I might not go! I have not been a fabric kinda creative person, but I would love a book to help jump start this area of my brain!
these shirts are fantastic!! would love to have a copy of this book!!
Yeah! I'm pregnant so embellishing my boring tee's would be pretty cool. Please pick me! :)

Fabulous tees, love the great ideas and the beautiful results! Thank you for the chance to win a copy.
What a great book idea. Her tee designs are luscious!!!
The t-shirt designs look awesome. I would love to learn how to make them. Looks fun.
I am now wondering if I could make my own tees. My son does silk screening so I have a source of blank tees from which to beg for.
I'ts not long since I retired - what a great way to re-cycle my work Tees and get over the age thing as well!!!
I've been wanting to do this for years but didn't have enough imagination to get started. I love Jennifer's designs shown on your post.

i have to wear tees at work- sea urchin poop, and all- and i'd love to snazz them up a bit.
Some of those designs are really cool! I haven't tried designing a tshirt since the tie dye craze a long long time ago. It looks like fun!
Oh! Love it! As someone earlier mentioned, I'm not a huge t-shirt fan...I usually end up layering with cardigans, so any cute tees get covered. However, I can see these designs prettying up my boring ol' tanks and jersey skirts!
Thanks for the chance to win! :)

I've never embellished Tees and it looks so cool!
When I was a young teen, my mom made me a t-shirt with the letters F-R-O-N-T appliqued on the front. It was a big hit with all my friends.
Cool tees. Love the long sleeves.
Wow! So many wonderful ideas, I would know which one to pick first! Love the idea of making my own t-shirts. Often, I like a color of a t-shirt but not the design or vice versa so this is the perfect solution!
Oh can't wait to get my hands on this book. Who doesn't LOVE tees!
I just got this book! It's amazing! Love all of the ideas
What a cool book! I love finding tees at thrift stores to give them a facelift. kimstoys at gmail dot com
What wonderful sharing people you are. thank you for thre chance to branch out into an unexplored area for me. Love the look of the book, and the projects and ideas. To be able to wear my artwork is such a buzz. Thanks for the chance to win.
I've tried T-shirt surgery, but I'm more of a painter than a sew-er. This book looks amazing! Thanks for sharing, Cathe!

I love idea books like this! This is SO inspiring! Thanks for sharing! :]
Wow, superb ideas! It would be great to win this book as I love to paint on tees and make them special and unique. Would be creative like crazy ;)!
Thank you for sharing this! I love the object prints, I never thought of doing that on fabric!
Very interesting technique and use of "found objects". This book could probably break the ice in trying to design t's and also other fabric. Browsed the book on Amazon and also read Jen's blog. I noticed her on your blog about the Renegade and was interested. All that said, do I really have the skill and tools to do this? Thanks Cathe for introducing so many of us to your extremely creative contacts and friends. It's a learning experience every day.
